A residency exploring crowd behaviour, taking over/up spaces in the street, events and festivals.  An exploration of how we react and interact in the festival space. In this space, we promenade, stroll and pass through, we are not subject to the everyday rules of purpose and mission. The festival space is a place to explore and express identities, we can live out an-other dream and have a taste of freedom. The everyday practice of living becomes another reality.

The crowd symbolising a loss of the individual, my role as an interventionist, my responsibility to find anonymous people in the crowd and offer a channel to make their individuality more visible. During the Jewish festival of Passover, I have memories of the being left ajar, with a glass of wine left at the table for the return of Elijah. I attach this powerful memory through ritual to notions of festival.

Actions and interventions took place in public spaces including direct and anonymous contact with unidentified individuals in crowds.

Over three days an empty space becomes a city, where there was once empty space an arrival birds in flock coming to rest restless then flying away.

The idea of anonymity became important during my time at festivals and at public events, somehow changing the space and surveying reactions to my clues of my presence, or shifting the space. I became fascinated by Wings of desire by Wim Wenders, a world inhabited by invisible angels who are like you and me, listening into thoughts, hopes and emotions. I wanted to become an anonymous being; to make contact with people I don't know and am unlikely to ever know.

Ideas for Just Beyond OZ

Over three days an empty space becomes a city - where there was empty space, we arrive like birds in a flock coming to rest - then flying away.

My interest and presentation for the residency involved and interest in the festival space as a place to explore and express identity, we can live out an-other dream and have a taste of freedom. The everyday practice of living becomes another reality. In the crowd will be an exploration of how we react and interact in the festival space. We will be flaneurs, promenading through time. At the festival we promenade, stroll and pass through the space, we are not subject to the everyday rules of purpose and mission.

Using sound, image and performance I will research the idea of festival and hopefully spend time at WOMAD interacting with the audience in the space. I will be looking at how people make their own amusement in the spaces between events. Looking at how time passes, night, morning, afternoon, how individuals and the crowd make their own entertainment.
